I had to look around a bit to find it.
I was sure it would and it does...

My HS letter sweater still fits!

It's the first day of school and I've got tons of homework already. They have no mercy! So I've gotten everything I need and, as you can see, I'm ready for a night of hard studying.

The fifth time is the charm, it turns out!

This afternoon Diana Nyad stepped out of the ocean onto the beach in Florida after her historic swim across the Florida Straights from Cuba. She's the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage. Her fourth try last year ended because of jellyfish stings on her face. She had a mask to wear this year and divers on her support team to scout for them and warn her when to put the mask on.

The 112 mile trip took a little over 53 hours. I don't think I could walk 112 miles in 53 hours! Two and a third days in the water, going without sleep, taking nourishment while she treaded water. It makes "iron man" competitions look like toddlers play!

I saw the video when she walked onto the beach. She looked exhausted and yet exhilarated. This was her fifth try and she was obviously elated to have succeeded this time. She spoke briefly and I loved the things she said.

"Never, ever, give up" and "You're never too old to chase your dreams." She also acknowledged her team saying that this kind of swim might seem like an individual sport but it took a whole team to make it happen. She's got class!

It's not just the swim that she accomplished. She had to raise the money to pay for the support and put together a team. And that's something she started working on very soon after her last attempt failed. She's an amazing lady. And a real dynamo at 64! My new hero/heartthrob.

Labor Day Reflections

When I was young I always had mixed feelings about Labor Day. As the symbolic end of summer holiday it always meant goodbye summer fun, hello school books. It often meant one last big summer adventure, too. A family camping trip. An outing to an amusement park (they wouldn't start calling them theme parks for decades yet). One last weekend at the ocean or the family cottage on the lake. One of my fondest was I was 12 years old. My uncle took two of my brothers and I on our first backpacking trip, in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. I still remember the trail names. We took the Cascade Brook Trail up to the AMC cabin at Lonesome Pond and then the Fishin' Jimmy Trail to a shelter at Kinsman Pond. We camped at the shelter just a short distance from the summit. I've done a lot of backpacking in the years since but that trip, over a Labor Day weekend, is still one of my favorite memories. And I still keep in touch with that uncle.

Summer vacation got boiled down to just two weeks, usually in July, once I was past school and working for a living. The Labor Day holiday wasn't as big a deal. Another chance to get out for summer fun or get together with the family. But not feeling like the end of summer so much anymore. Then my own came along and before long it was their last summer fling before school start again. I often arranged to take some of my vacation time at the end of August and we'd make a week or two of that last hurrah of summer. I have boxes of pictures from the things we did together those years. (Back when you had to buy this stuff called "film" and you got your pictures back on strips of plastic and paper!) Those were the days!

Not much planned this year. We babysat for the new grandson last night. He's a fussy one. Cried and fussed for half the time and cooed and murmured the rest of the time. We might just get in the car and go for a drive later, just to get out of the house. It's stopped raining. Maybe we'll find some roads we've never been down before...

I hope you are having a Labor Day weekend to En-Joy!

Like A Theme Park For The Sex Trade

That's one way it's been described. It's just recently opened in Zurich, Switzerland. They've set up a small, circular road in a park like setting complete with bathrooms, lockers, small cafe tables and a laundry and shower. And Fashionably teak-colored open wooden garages, popularly called "sex boxes" by the Swiss media. The idea is to move the sex trade from other areas of the city and make it safer for the sex workers.

The sex trade (I'm trying not to use the "p" word so it doesn't get censored) has been legal in Switzerland since 1942. Subject to local rules and regulations, permits and taxes. Being legal doesn't make it exempt from problems or make it welcome in every neighborhood. This facility was built, using public funds, in a former industrial area between a rail yard and a major highway, away from the city center. Construction was approved by the voters. It opened last week.

"We built the place to be secure for the sex workers. It also had to be discreet for the sex workers and the clientele," said Michael Herzig of Zurich's social welfare department. "But we thought if we build the place, we can also make it look good."

Here's how it works. "" cruise along the park road where they "interview" and negotiate with the sex workers. It's made to simulate what goes on in the city center neighborhoods. Once they make a "date" with one of the women they pull their car into one of the "sex boxes". On the driver's side, the boxes are very narrow, making it difficult for him to get out of the car. On the passenger side, there is plenty of space, an alarm button and an emergency exit. There are no video surveillance cameras for to worry about but there is on-site security to respond to the alarm button. To use the space sex workers buy an annual permit and pay nightly taxes which go toward maintenance costs.

There are also safe-sex reminders: "There is a big HIV prevention advertisement right in front of the car, so the driver has to look at a condom, to remind him he should wear one," the city authorities say.

The Swiss didn't invent this approach. It's been done in the Netherlands and Germany but hasn't always succeeded in moving the trade away from other areas. It has proven to be safer for the sex workers and the .

I don't think it will catch on here though. We have a whack-a-mole mindset on the sex trade, or that part of it anyway. We pretend we can stop it by making it illegal in 49 states. I'm not sure I'd go to the sex park if I were in Zurich (like that's going to happen anyway!) but the idea of it is kind of intriguing. I've never tried that but if I would I'd prefer to do it in a safe environment. Of course, the legal brothels in Nevada are a lot closer than Zurich if that were what I wanted...

What if there was a sex park near you? Would you?

I got a new tool for screwing this week!

Does anyone have an idea how to use this thing?

(I'll post another picture of it in use tomorrow.)

En-Joy!

Is it a key holder so you can use your drill on a lock that just won't turn?

No.

Is it a wire brush holder for using your drill to clean out small pipes and fixtures?

No.

OK. What is it?

I like going to the mountains in the heat of August. I have fond memories of many backpacking trips in August. The fresh air. The forest. The campsites so far from everything. And swimming in mountain ponds and streams. After a day of hiking it's so refreshing to take a dip - for those brave enough. That water is cold!

It's been a long, hot hike. Here I am getting out of my clothes into my skinny dipping suit, ready to take a dip in that deep pool in the creek right next to the campsite.

Anyone else ready for a dip in the pool?

En-Joy the rest of summer!

Cleaning Out My Rec Closet...

Years ago, when I "retired" from the picture factory, I cleaned out the closets in the 's bedrooms. They'd long since grown and been out on their own and it was time to get rid of what was left behind. I made the closet in what had been my 's room into a central storage space for all the recreational and camping gear. I rounded up the bats and gloves and balls, sleeping bags, fencing swords, snow shoes, tents, fishing poles, camp stoves and all the rest from the attic and basement and hall closet and got them put away neat and organized in one place. And it worked great. Everything was there and easy to find.

But that was 8 years ago. Entropy takes it's toll. It's become gradually more disorganized and cluttered over time as things have been taken out and put back and new things have been added. It got so I couldn't open the door without something falling out! And yet the shelves I'd put in were half empty.

So I pulled everything out and started over. It should fit. It did once before. And last year when my wanted to borrow camping gear I made him promise not to bring it back. So there's less than there was.

I added one more small shelf and a few hanger hooks. Everything is grouped neatly where they can be found when I want them. Here's a picture. How'd I do?

It's raining today. This is how I amused myself instead of going on a hike. I hope you're keeping yourself amused today.

BTW - That red backpack hanging on the wall behind me is my "evacuation" pack. It's got some clothes, towels, soap, toilet paper, batteries (which I rotate every year), flashlights and a radio, and other essential items if we ever have to evacuate because of an emergency or natural disaster. If you don't have something like this you might want to consider it... just in case.

My Lucky Mega Millions Day. Again.

It was a slow day at the shop. It's been a good week so a "lazy" Saturday was OK. It gave me time to knock off quite a few of the certificate frames on my big order and even get a few other things done too.

As I was doing the end of the week book keeping at the end of the day I remembered I hadn't checked last night's MegaMillions numbers. I was in a pretty good mood once I had my accounts up to date and in the black. I brought up the NY lottery website and checked my ticket.

Three of my numbers came up! And one of my mega ball numbers came up! Not all on one line, unfortunately. But in a couple of combinations to the tune of $40.

Better than the $3 I got last time, at least. I'm not a serious gambler. I play the MegaMillions with just a little of the money I don't spend on cigarettes anymore. I'd tried the obvious "pick five lucky numbers and a mega ball lucky number" but that almost never paid off. I'd win $2 for the mega ball number once in a while. So I decided that just five lucky numbers aren't enough, that if I had more lucky numbers maybe I'd win more. I picked eight lucky numbers. Of course, you can only bet five numbers on each game (plus the mega ball but I'll get to that in a bit). I put together a matrix with different combinations of the eight lucky numbers. There are too many different combinations to bet them all. On my budget, at least. The matrix is eight games so that each of the eight lucky numbers is used in five games in combination with different numbers.

Then there's the mega ball. I picked two lucky mega ball numbers. For no particular reason I picked a pair of numbers that are the reverse of each other, like 23 and 32. I alternate them as the mega ball number on every other game.

I said I'm not much of a gambler. I used to just buy the tickets when the jackpot got over $100 million. Hey, if I'm gonna win I'm gonna win BIG, right? And I never followed it to see if my numbers came up on those "small" jackpots. Maybe just I didn't want to know if I'd missed out, "if only" I'd played THAT game!

I heard a theory that if you're going to play, don't be a snob about those "only" $12 million jackpots. Skipping drawings just reduces your chance to win on "your" numbers. So I decided to give it a try. This was the third drawing since I started using the eight game matrix. I'd been using a truncated five game version before.

My total $40 win was the sum of a bunch of small payouts. The matrix isn't JUST for winning the jackpot! It's also to squeeze the most out of it when at least some of your numbers come up. I had the mega ball number on half of the games on the ticket at a $2 payout each. Some of those games also matched one or two other numbers, adding to the payout. And one game earned a payout for three matching numbers (but not the mega ball - ah, "if only!"). See, eight lucky numbers IS better than just five!

3 drawings X $8 per drawing = $24. So I'm $16 ahead. I could quit now, buy a bottle of whiskey and celebrate. Or, I could say the next two drawings are free...

I already bought tickets for the next draw when I cashed my ticket in.

I hope luck has smiled on you this weekend. En-Joy!

I got that message from this site for several hours today. Anyone else having that error accessing the site?

I know several others have recently blogged about extreme sluggishness in loading pages here. I've seen that from time to time and it's been a bit annoying but nothing more than that until today. I've been able to work around the sluggishness by logging out and logging back in and most of the time that's fixed the problem. Or, at least, made it go away for awhile. But I've been able to navigate around the site with some patience.

I'm just wondering if the whole site was down this afternoon or if it was something more localized? It was NOT my internet connection as I was able to navigate to other sites while service here was unavailable.

Now that the site is back up I think I'll do my business here while I can. Before something else stops working!

En-joy your day on or off site!

My own thing this week is work. I'll be staying at the shop late a few nights to please one of my best customers and try to get their 100 employee recognition awards framed by the end of the month. I've made the mats and cut the glass. Now I've got 400 frame legs to cut...

We're so laid back on the dress code at my shop that the official rule is it's optional.

I like to work safely, too. See, there are no loose clothes to get caught in that saw!

WNY - A Climate Sweet Spot Just Right For HNH!

I've come to realize that Western New York is a little bit of paradise. Especially in the summer time. Those of us who live here are very smart indeed for having picked such an ideal place.

I went hiking this morning. It was another perfect summer day. Sunny and dry and comfortably mild. We are blessed here in Western NY with a lot of good weather. And not a lot of extreme weather.

Hurricanes? Too far from the oceans. They get here, sometimes, all worn out, just weak relics of powerful storms.

Flooding? It rarely, if ever, rains hard enough and long enough. We get a little, localized, mostly in smaller streams and tributaries, usually in the Spring. Nothing that sweeps away cars bridges.

Tornadoes? OK, we have had a few west of Rochester. They used to be very rare but have happened more in recent years. Still, they are relatively small. No EF-5s. Not even close.

Earthquakes? Not that you'd notice. Seriously, the last one we had I heard dishes rattling in the china cabinet. I thought it was the cat up there and went to shoo him away. Only he wasn't there. It was a WNY earthquake. And then it was over.

Forest fires? We do have forests. It could happen. It's rarely dry enough long enough to get severe danger and most forests are too small for fire to spread beyond a few hundred acres. And yet we have a lot of trees.

Tsunamis and sea level rise? Hey, we're hundreds of feet above sea level and have mountains between us and the sea. I don't think there have been any Great Lake tsunamis, have there? Droughts? Not long and not severe. Those lakes help with that.

Blizzards? OK. Yes. We do get some pretty good snow storms. They do seem to have become less frequent though and our winters not as cold. I remember a spell in the late 80s when the temperature didn't get above zero (-18 C) for a week. And that wasn't uncommon in winter here. We've only rarely had temperatures below zero, or even in single digits, in the last ten years.

I think we're in a global climate change sweet spot here in WNY!

The winters have gotten just a bit milder and easier to endure. BTW, it never did snow again here after I stopped filling the salt bucket early in March. Our summers have gotten milder, too, without any of the extremes other parts of the country are seeing. We don't get those unbearable weeks of 98 degree days of suffocating humidity like we used to. They happen far less often and don't last as long.

I was thinking about this today as I hiked. It's the middle of August. What used to be called "days". Yet it was perfect weather for a hike. Warm enough to hike with my shirt unbuttoned. And still, I barely worked up a sweat. We have so many nice parks and wild places for hiking and biking and paddle sports here in our little paradise. With enough space to find some privacy even on a mid-summer day with lot's of people in the park. Of course, I took time on such a perfect day for some HNH photo ops.

This was on a bench at the top of a hill, hidden by the full canopy of leaves all around. It seemed like a good place to stop and get comfortable.

A Perfect Summer Day In Paradise

It's been such a cool month of August here in western New York I thought maybe the weatherman's calendar had skipped ahead to September. We had a spell of that hot, oppressive, August like weather in July. It didn't last long, just a week or so. We haven't turned on the air conditioner in the bedroom since. We've had mild days, mid 70s. And cool nights, down to the low 50s. Nice weather. Comfortable sleeping weather. I'm not complaining about it. I like it when I'm not already sweating again the minute I step out of the shower. And I remember a lot of Augusts when the weather was like that. We'd often take vacation time and take the camping in the mountains for a week then head off to northern New Hampshire to visit grandma and grandpa for another week.

Today, though, it was a perfect August summer. When I left the house this morning it felt like a different kind of day. The air didn't have that morning chill in it like it did yesterday. And it warmed up quickly through the morning. It was sunny with just a few high, scattered clouds. It was cool inside my shop and stayed cool all day. I opened the big overhead door in the common area outside my shop. It leads to a platform off the loading dock with stairs down to the parking lot and main entrance. It was a slow day. I finished a couple of projects then cleaned up. Emptied the trash. Vacuumed the floors and work benches and all the saw dust and aluminum glitter from around the miter saw. A little material ordering and book keeping and it was 4 pm and I was ready to start my weekend.

It was in the low 80s by then, feeling like a sunny summer day. Comfortable still, with low humidity. I switched on the TV when I got home. The Red Sox/Yankees game had a 4:05 start time and I was hoping our local Fox station would be carrying it. They were. The second inning was just ending with a nothing to nothing tie. I went down to the 'fridge. There's one beer. Just right! I go back up and settle down in front of the TV. Life is good! Summer is in the air. It's the weekend, I'm sitting back with my feet up watching the Red Sox. With a beer. Like my little bit of paradise. For an afternoon, at least.

It got better. The Sox scored three runs in the fourth inning. A gift of some bad fielding plays by the Yanks. I do like watching sports on the new digital TV I bought for C. for Mother's Day. Especially when the Sox are beating the Yankees. It's been at least 20 years since we got a new TV! The Yanks got a run back in the fifth inning but the Red Sox scored three more times after that and won it. They hold on to 1st place for another few days, at least. Yep, a little bit of paradise here today. And a real, no business weekend to en-joy. I will, too, because it's going to be a busy week starting Tuesday morning!

I hope you're all finding a little of your own paradise this weekend.

En-Joy it!

HNW - Working By The Window

I've been busy this week. Busy working, not so much time for play.

I used to go through cycles of having no work in the shop to having just enough. Now it's turned into cycles of having just enough work to being too damn busy. And I like it that way. It's almost as good as having a regular paycheck.

I've worked a few nights the past few weeks. There's still a little time for play at work, though. Wouldn't work be a total drag if we couldn't have a little fun while we're at it? So here I am burning the midnight oil, working by the window.

I was framing original drawings of famous golfers for a gallery owner who had a booth at the PGA Championship event last weekend. And it was one of those hot days. The afternoon sun warms up the back room and it takes all night to cool down. I'm staying cool while I work, though!

En-Joy!
