Umpires - What Kind Are You?

One of the gems of wisdom I recall from High School is this saying about baseball umpires. If my memory is right (and just a little time has passed to blur things a bit!) it was Mr. M, the biology teacher, who said this. I don't remember if it was his own or if he was quoting someone else, but I heard it first from him.

There are three kinds of umpires.

The first kind says "There's balls and there's strikes and I call 'em as I see 'em."

The second kind says "There's balls and there's strikes and I call 'em as they are."

The third kind says "There's balls and there's strikes but they ain't nothin' until I call 'em."

Which kind of umpire are you?

I'm multi-modal, depending on circumstances. On a project that's 100% mine, from concept to finish, I'm very much "...they ain't nuthin' until I call 'em." It's my project, I get to say that about it.

When I'm being an arbiter for something that I don't have a personal stake in I'm very much a "... call 'em as they are" kind of guy. When I worked in quality control at the chemical factory I spent most of my time gathering facts and information. Then I'd call it what it was. "The #3 reactant pump needs to be repaired or replaced", for example. And 99% of the time I got that right.

In my everyday life I "call 'em as I see 'em", knowing that while it may look different from other perspectives I have to go with what I know at the moment.

(And, in sexual situations, I'd add a fourth mode, "... it ain't nothin' until she calls it." But that wasn't part of the curriculum in high school...)

I'm a baseball addict. Especially in October. Especially in October when the Red Sox are still playing.

My cat, Phred likes to sit with me while I watch the games and I tried to get him in the picture. He wouldn't sit still for all the ups and downs of setting up the camera though. I asked him at the start of the Boston/Detroit series if he was cheering for the Red Sox or the Tigers. He said likes the big cats.

Here I am watching the game. Top of the seventh... One out... 3-2 count... Napoli swings...

Home run!

I do like that the Sox are up two games to one now. But as a pure baseball fan these have been three great baseball games. Even the one the Tigers won 1-0.

I hope your favorit team is making you smile, too (with apologies to Tiger fans)!

Where's The F'ing Game On The Radio?

I'm a big fan of playing baseball in the daytime. I wish more World Series games were day games. Like they used to be. The Tigers/Red Sox game started in daylight this afternoon. I thought I'd be able to listen to it on the radio while I worked at the shop. I have a lot of identical mats to cut and it would have been great to have the game on while I worked. I remember when I was a , in the summer time, someone always had a radio tuned in listening to the Red Sox games. Sometimes I'd listen to the game with my grandfather. Sometimes it was just on in the background while everyone went about doing their thing. But you knew everyone was paying attention because we'd all cheer when Yaz hit one out or the Sox played great defense. My mom taught me how to keep a baseball score card listening to the radio. And watching at Fenway.

I looked it up. The ESPN radio network - ALCS playoff game, in my town, WROC, 950 AM. So I tuned it in. Sports talk. Talking about Sunday's game. Blabbing about what great pitching the Tigers will bring against Boston. But no game. WTF??? Hello, guys, there's REAL baseball going on while you're talking about baseball!

I could stream the game live on my Mac. But only if I sign up for a paid subscription service. Looks like MLB has it nailed down. Not even streaming radio of the game without subscription. So I settled for a Game Time Update scoreboard through Yahoo Sports. And I'd stop by the screen and check for an update every so often. It's a pitching duel through the early innings. A few hits but no runs. Now it's time to close the shop.

In a few minutes I'm home and turn on the TV. It's in the 6th inning, still no score. "C" has to rest her arm for 48 hrs. (arthritis) so It's my turn to cook tonight. I only watch a few minutes. "C" knows I really want to watch the game. I get everything prepped in the kitchen then come up for a quick game check just as the Sox hit a home run.

Back down to cook. I start getting things sizzling when I get e text message on my Phone. "3rd Boston out." I'm a bit surprised. It's nice but a bit unusual for her to be quite that thoughtful. I didn't expect it. I guess she appreciates my dilemma more than I thought. I like those kinds of surprises.

The text messages start coming so much it's hard to keep stirring and keeping things under control. "Martinez on 2nd" "Bad for Sox" (I know Martinez is a Tiger, of course, that being a "guy thing" factoid.) "Strike out" "Guy still on 2nd" Etc. Etc. Until everything was just about ready. My turn to surprise. I get out a tray, serve two plates of what I've whipped up, add napkins, utensils and a couple of glasses of water and take it up to the TV room just in time for the bottom of the eighth with runners on and one out. We watch the rest of the game while we eat.

No, the game was NOT on the radio. That's a bit sad. I "saw" this game on the Game Time scoreboard, "C's" Live Text Updates, and on TV. Well, what's a fan to do when the f'ing radio stations don't carry the game?

Best of all, of course, the Sox won 1-0! So much for all the sports pundits blather about Detroit having the best of the pitching match ups for the series. Ha!

Have you done been nicely surprised by someone lately? Or done a nice surprise for someone?

I took my wife, "C", on a date Sunday. It was a perfect Fall day. Just right for a foliage tour.

We often live separate lives together. I take care of my business at my shop and she has her own small business which occupies half of the first floor of the house. It keeps us busy, each in our own ways. In the evenings she watches TV in our upstairs "apartment". Sometimes I watch with her. The rest of my time I spend in my "man cave", on-line here or in the several other places I'm active, keeping up with family on the FB thing, or throwing my opinion into the fray on news and politics blogs. There's been a lot to rant and tease about the the last few weeks!

So I asked her mid-week if she'd like to spend Sunday afternoon on a long drive through the countryside. We got started just before noon. I know because "Car Talk" was just wrapping up on our local NPR station as we pulled out of the driveway. I'd thought about heading west until we got to Lake Erie but then I remembered that the Buffalo Bills were playing a home game and we'd run into a lot of traffic if we went that way. So we headed east instead.

I tend to do more navigating than driving on these excursions. I had an area in mind, some place we'd been past many times but never stopped to en-joy. We followed along the Erie Canal for quite some distance then struck out on local roads heading north and from there making somewhat random left and right turns. We did manage to get lost (not all local roads are that well marked!) at one point until we eventually crossed the road we thought we were supposed to be on. And that's the fun of exploring new places.

We eventually ended up in the vicinity of the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge, a large tract of marshes and migratory bird nesting areas just west of Syracuse. I've considered it as a hiking destination and this was a good chance to scout it out a bit. "C" has severe mobility restrictions so we didn't plan and doing any actual hiking. We did find quite a few parking areas for trail access. As you can see from the picture though, the wildlife refuge was "closed". I wonder if anyone told all the wildlife that they're not supposed to go beyond the barricades? Their flight south will just have to wait until the "grownups" in Washington finish arguing over money. Judging from the cars I saw at a few of the parking spots, not everyone is waiting. With no TV cameras rolling or politicians looking for publicity it seems there's nothing to stop people from just en-joying the "closed" public land.

We got back home at dinner time so we went out to eat. I didn't want her to have to cook on our "date" (and I wasn't in the mood for cooking myself). We got back just in time to turn on the TV as see Tom Brady and the Patriots pull off a last second touchdown to beat the Saints. Right before I settled in to watch "my" Red Sox in the baseball playoffs. "C" fell asleep reading in her easy chair before the Red Sox pulled off a ninth inning rally to win. It was a good day to be a New England sports fan!

The foliage wasn't at peak color yet and I didn't get any good pictures. Maybe we'll do this again in a couple of weeks...

How do you en-joy a perfect Fall weekend?

Just something simple this week, from a set I took earlier this year.

We've had some nice warm days this past week. Cooler at night, great for sleeping. Then pretty soon in the morning things start to warm up and there's no need for the robe anymore...

Happy HNW!

This is from a scene that was left out of the original 1933 classic, The Invisible Man". Even invisible, it was just too much for audiences in the 1930's.

"Left on the cutting room floor" never means discarded. I was able to track down the only surviving copy. So here it is, the invisible man and the invisible woman hot in action.

And, what do you know, look at that. Even the invisible man wore a condom!

HNW - I've Been Framed!

So many frames to choose from. Frame of mind. Frame of reference. Time frame. Frame up.

And picture frames. I have so many of those to choose from, too! Cherry frames. Oak frames. Metal frames. Gold frames. Floater frames. Shadow box frames. New frames. Used frames...

I need one big enough to frame ... me!

That narrows down the choices a bit. Let me see. Here's a nice oak frame. Simple scoop shape, classic lines. Four feet tall but only 18 inches wide. A tight fit! Here's another. Maple with nice finished corner designs. Three feet six inches square. Wide enough but not tall enough. Ah, here's one. A bit aged but a nice big gold frame with lots of scallops and flowery designs around the rim and lip. And it's five and a half feet tall and three feet wide. Just right.

So, here I am - framed and ready to spice up the decor in your home...

An Upside Down World - The End of days?

Has the world has turned upside down?

This is September. The Red Sox are supposed to fade, to turn April's dreams into September's exasperations. Like they did in 2011, starting the last week with a big lead and ending up left out of the playoffs. The Yankees are supposed to soar now. Passing their Beantown rivals on their way to another inevitable championship. That's the way it always happens. That's how I know it's September and Summer is almost over - the Yanks are beating the Sox and the playoffs are slipping a little more out of their reach every day.

That's the way it's supposed to be. But it's all backward this year! The Yankees swoon while the Red Sox play the best ball in the league. In September! I love seeing the Sox win like this. But I worry that it means the world has gone awry.

Are we headed for the end of the world? Is the sun dying out? Or about to explode? Are we in for a ten thousand year flood?

Well, maybe it's not quite that all that bad. After all, it's not like the Cubs going to win the world series! Yet. Ah. Maybe the world isn't falling apart after all.

What a great day today! Sunny and mild. Just up to the mid-seventies by afternoon. A nice change from the cool weather we had on the weekend. And a perfect day to clean the inside of my car. It hasn't been done since early Spring. Vacuum the carpet and upholstery, wash the windows and dash. Straighten out the clutter. Ha! There wasn't any. I don't let it get like that.

It was a bit hard to get half naked while I was doing this (without drawing a curious crowd - and explaining the selfie camera shots - "Half naked what?" - wouldn't have left time to get the cleaning done!).

Just remember, I'm all the way naked under those clothes!

I tried something new with my camera to get these shots. I set the function to "Continuous shooting - Time lapse". Then I set the camera in an inconspicuous place and went to work cleaning the car. It snapped a picture every 30 seconds. Here are two of the better ones.

Enjoy!

A simple moment of reflection and remembrance for this week's HNW theme.

Remembering all those who were lost that day and the sacrifices of so many others since. Remembering the people I was with that day as we watched horrified at what was happening.

I've been working with a gallery owner, framing some art posters by a local artist and veteran. The proceeds go to support local veteran groups. The message of the art is so appropriate today:

"Never Again"

I hope your remembrances today leave you with hope for what comes tomorrow and every day after.
