Guilt and Performance Anxiety...

So in the past couple of months I have had a few of experiences with what I would have to call performance anxiety. With each of these men, we had met for drinks and talked for quite a while, and got along great. Why we are Friends...

Someone emailed me today asking if he could be my a-f-f friend. I get a-f-f friend requests all the time, sometimes with an email and most of the time just out of the blue with no context. I think I maybe have sent out requests to a handful of people. My friends list is not very long, I think. I have seen profiles where people have thousands and thousands of friends. That really makes me wonder... Are these people really your friends? What is a friend in that case? Are you just a "friend collector" and don't really care who it is?
I'm not really sure why people use this friends feature. I know one technical benefit of the friends list is that you can limit certain things on your profile to be available to only people on your friends list. Pictures, videos, and blogs are the things I think you can limit. There might be more but I really have no idea. Sounds like a lot of work setting that stuff up given how broken a-f-f seems to be most of the time. I'd be surprised if that feature works more often than not. Oh and then there's that tab on the home page where you can see what your friends have been up to recently. That's one feature that I actually use, although sometimes it is completely blank from one hour to the next, so just as buggy as the rest of the site.
So then what gets someone on my friends list? There are probably two primary categories that I would put people into. One is people that I have actually met in person, and have both an ongoing online and offline relationship. We email pretty regularly, whether here or on another email service, or we text, IM and or talk in person. That doesn't mean that everyone I've ever met is on my friends list. For me the important distinction here is the ongoing part of that relationship. The second category is people that I have not met in person, but have probably vested sufficient time in getting to know them that I like to see what they're up to on a more frequent basis. These are mostly people that I chat with, or whose profiles I perv all the time to see their new pics and video, or people whose blogs I follow. That last group, by the way, is by far the most entertaining. If you don't read the a-f-f blogs, I highly recommend them. Some are seriously hilarious, others educational, and nearly all make me think about stuff I usually don't think about.
Given those general categories, my friends list isn't very long as a result. I don't accept friend requests of people that I have never heard of before the request came in. It probably takes a few weeks of emails or chat conversations before I'll accept a friend request along those lines. I also look at it every few months and remove people that I've fallen out of touch with. It's not personal, it's just spring cleaning. I should seriously do the same thing to my outlook contacts but that would take days and days of concerted effort and who has that kind of free time? Not me.
