My Lucky Mega Millions Day

Own a business and be your own boss!

Work when you want to, take time off when you want to.

I was at the shop working late a few nights last week and for part of yesterday, Sunday, too. Cleaning up, sorting and putting away inventory, doing the book keeping and writing purchase orders. This is supposed to be my day off. My day. For doing "me" stuff. And now that I've finished going to the post office to mail a finished job to a far away customer (there was a long line of people with complicated transactions, of course), depositing the weekend checks in the bank, putting the sharp the blades on my miter cutter and taking the dull blades to be sharpened (I buy up a carton of staples while I'm there), and stopping at a couple of material supply wholesalers to buy what I need for that big job that came in last week (100 frames and certificates!), and driving all over the county to do all of it, the rest of today will be my day.

You can see how well that being master of my own time is going for me! Now I am done with work and it's time to play. There is, at least, compensation for losing the day off. It means I'm busy with work and I'll actually get paid this week!

A blimp buzzed overhead while I was at the paper supply store. I tried to get a picture of it but it was too far out of range by time I got the camera out. It's one of the last vestiges of the golf championship that played out down the road last week. The traffic jams and celebrities are gone but the blimp hung around to give rides and tours today.

I stopped to buy a MegaMillions ticket on the way back home and realized I hadn't checked my ticket from Friday's drawing. The Jackpot went up so I know I'm not a millionaire yet. When I put the ticket in the reader at the store it rang up the winner's chime.

Wow! My lucky day! I haven't decided what to spend my big $3 windfall on yet but I think I'll keep my day job, for now.

No time for hiking today after all that. I've got a batch of pictures of the 6 week old grandson to download and send off to the relatives. And decide which to print and frame. And maybe when I'm done with the pictures I'll take a stab at figuring out why I get an error when I try to create bling lately... I should never have tried to move all the programs and files to a thumb drive...

That's how my lucky MegaMillions day is going. How is your Monday treating you?

And as long as I'm going through my photo files, here's a picture from a previous hike.

It's been a busy week for me. I've put in a few evenings of work at the shop. I like when it gets busy but it sure would be nice to smooth out the work load! Before last week I was washing windows just for something to do. The good news is that when I'm busy I make money at it.

I did manage to squeeze in some time for taking HNW pictures, at least. I'm not sure if this "playing with food" or just "playing food".

Who want's to play with my food? Anyone hungry?

What A Car Wash Should Be Like

Sometimes an idea comes along that takes you by surprise and makes you want to follow it and see where it goes. I came across this idea for a "premium" service car wash. And franchises are available! I'm thinking of opening one and just watching the cash roll in, just like the brochure says!

I'm looking for a good location for it right now. I found a few that would have been perfect, in great settings, too, but landlords can be so fussy about some things.

What do you think? You'd go for the premium service package if there was one of these near you, wouldn't you?

So much summer and so many fun things to do!

Baseball, car washes, swimming, fishing, hiking, sun bathing, water skiing, jet skiing, and just sitting and having a beer. And that's just in the morning!

And, the women of summer! Well, to paraphrase an old saying, "Summer fun, some aren't". And, ah, that fun is the best part of any season!

I do like the paddling sports. I've gotten pretty good at handling a paddle.

If I were at the family's place up on the lake in NH I'd have taken this in the boat house. Or out on the water, early, for sunrise. But I'm not. So there's no water in the picture.

Paddling is always so much more fun in pairs. I've got an extra paddle. Anyone want to go go for a ride ... in my canoe?

HNH: The Naked City

"The Naked City" was a TV crime drama that had a 5 year run beginning in 1958. The reason I remembered that, yes I do remember seeing it in it's original broadcasts (yes mom and dad thought I was "too young to be watching that stuff" but Grandma and Grandpa weren't as fussy about that). The reason I remembered is because I took some panorama pictures of Rochester today and I was trying to think of a catchy title. The show was on from the time I was eight until I was thirteen. And, see, even though I was exposed to the word "naked" at such a young age I still turned out perfectly normal.

Anyone else remember that show?

I ditched the hiking in favor of biking again today. I peddled over to Cobbs Hill and up the road to the reservoir at the top. There's a nice stand of forest running along a ridge to the north of the reservoir. I used to live in the neighborhood just north of there before I was married. And just a few blocks to the west before we bought the house. There were a lot of nice trails for riding on back then.

Times have changed. Now bicycles are prohibited from all trails in city parks. They've got signs up. And kiosks that explain the topography with maps of the trails. It's the march of progress. No bicyles, though. So I skipped riding the trails. Just as well. My legs were feeling like rubber by time I got to the top of the hill. I need to get out and ride more than once a week.

I followed the loop road around the reservoir. There one spot where there's a view of the city between the tree tops. I stopped there and took pictures of the city skyline with a nice mix of clouds and blue sky in the background. My legs recovered by the time I started back. I took a bit different way back, a bit longer but a chance to see different neighborhoods. Altogether a little over 10 miles.

I like the bicycle riding as a substitute for hiking. It's a bit more aerobic. Not that I don't work up a sweat and get the pulse rate up hiking. I do. And I still like the hiking. I need to find a way to do both! I don't end up anyplace I can take half naked pictures when I bike. That is part of the fun of hiking.

If I Were Weiner's Campaign Manager...

For those who aren't familiar with American political sex scandals, Anthony Weiner was the US Congressman from New York who resigned after sexy photos he'd sent on Twitter made the evening news broadcasts. Now he's running for Mayor of New York City and more recent pictures and private text messages have surfaced. He's taken a strategy of apologizing and saying it was a big mistake that's behind him. It stretches credibility to really believe that though.

If I were running his campaign I'd take it the opposite direction. In fact, I'd use it to raise money for the campaign by getting this message out on FB, Twitter and everywhere I could post it:

I think I might have a chance. His campaign manager resigned today. He needs to shake things up if he's going to stay in the race. I've sent him a synopsis of my ideas and an outline for a TV ad blitz. I'm sure he'll look it over. I sent it with a picture of my wife in her bra and panties.

Does anyone have any ideas for slogans for his positions on the important issues in this campaign?

Celebrating Attachments

I'm "attached". I'm open about that. Some others here, men and women, are open about their attachments, too.

I think as the word is used here it infers that one has a spouse or a steady girlfriend or boyfriend, with or without a live in arrangement. I think sometimes other arrangements, including FWBs and FBs can qualify as attachments without appreciably altering the meaning of the term.

I got involved with an attached - married - woman I met here in my first iteration as a member. Our relationship lasted for many years. We lived far apart but we talked or chatted or texted or e-mailed (or all of them) every day. I learned a lot about celebrating other people's attachments from that. She was sexually starved in her marriage. It's why she was on this site looking. Cindy enjoyed our various forms of cybersex but of course it's not the same as the real thing. On special occasions, her birthday, their anniversary, and the like, she'd get hubby's attention for an evening. She'd be beaming with delight as she told me about it the next day and I always felt pleased for her. I celebrated with her. I never felt jealous of her husband. He was her attachment and I'd accepted that all along.

I thought she was feeling the same way. Then once I mentioned something I'd done with my wife, some place we'd gone together, and she got jealous of it. She let me know. She was never one to hide her feelings. We talked about it. Why she felt that way. We both gained a lot from it. I shared my sense of celebrating her husband being there for her when I was so far away. That it came from a deep friendship that cared more for her happiness than for always being the one who made her happy. She did come to feel that way. Sometime later she even thanked me for showing her that. She'd found it to be helpful in drawing her closer in some of her other relationships. Jealousy never interfered between us after that.

I've had some encounters with different views about attachments since then. The statuses "single", "divorced" and "widowed" here all invite the assumption that a person is unattached. While that may sometimes be true I've found it often to be a false assumption. I've met several here who are single and don't see their ongoing relationships with men, either local or long distance, as attachments. After all, they aren't living together or "going steady" so they're not attachments. As I've gotten to know them and they've been open about those other relationships I've celebrated them just as I had with Cindy and her husband. It's not always reciprocated. Plans to spend an afternoon and evening together with a woman were once scuttled when another of her other A F F connections dropped in on her unexpectedly. I was disappointed that our plans got changed but we could always reschedule and I had been blessed with her attentions the evening before. Things like that are bound to happen when someone has multiple attachments and I certainly didn't expect to be the center of her world after just a few dates. She once related a story to me about getting a phone call from one gentleman, a regular friend, while she was in bed with a new friend and having to discreetly put him off until the next day. I think she sees herself as truly unattached despite those sorts of things happening. She eventually grew troubled by my one other attachment and she drifted away.

Not all my experiences here have gone that way. Just enough so that I've learned to seek, and share, that sort of feeling about each other's other relationships early on. Sometimes it's there, sometimes it's not. I don't think there's necessarily a correlation to single or married status. It's more correlated to personality, outlook, and self confidence. It's easier to feel good about other people's successes if you feel good about yourself. Suspicion and jealousy come from a place of insecurity.

I've purposely left out of this discussion those, mostly men, who conceal their other relationships and falsely claim to be single and unattached. One just can't celebrate attachments that are kept secret and just can't be very open with someone who closes themselves to you that way.

Hoping you all share fun and good times with someone you feel attached to this weekend. En-Joy!

Biking, Not Hiking. But Still Half Naked.

My car was in the shop for a rear strut repair and that meant no hiking today. It was since a nice, cool summer morning. Such a relief after those 90 something days last week. I decided to get my bicycle out and substitute a nice long ride for my usual Monday hiking. I'd cleaned it up and oiled the chain a few weeks ago but the tires both needed air. I got the pump out and started with the back wheel. The recommended pressure is 35 to 60 psi. I'm going to be riding mostly on pavement so I want them firm. I pump it up to 50 psi. Firm but not rock hard. Perfect. Same to the front wheel. As I'm putting the pump away I hear a small "pop" sound and a hiss. Oh, oh. That's probably not good.

Sure enough, the front tire is dead flat. I've had the bike for 15 years so I'm not surprised the rubber is wearing out. I take the front wheel off and pull out the tube. One small hole about 4 inches from the valve stem on the rim side. I check for anything sharp, like a spoke anchor, but there's nothing there. I have a patch kit (if I can find it!) but I decide that the rubber is too old. I'l just go buy a new tube. In fact, I'll buy two since the rear tube is 15 years old, too.

The local bike shop opens at ten. I'm there at 9:15. I go home and spend a half hour here reading blogs. I get the two tubes and but when I go to put everything back together I find a small tear in the sidewall of the front tire. I check the back tire and find a few spots worn bare. OK, I need two new tires, too. Should have thought of that before. After all, that rubber is just as old as the tubes. Good thing the bike shop is only a mile away.

This time I get both tires inflated to 50 psi with no surprises. I put the wheels back on the bike and I'm ready to go. It's warmed up a bit since I started out just putting a little air in the tires. In fact, it's warm enough for my favorite way of riding - in shorts and shirtless. When I'd ride my bike to work at the picture factory I loved those hot August afternoons. I'd take off my shirt, stuff it in the knapsack and strap it to the rack on the back of the bike. The feel of the sun and the wind on my skin was such a great way to celebrate summer. I'd get the occasional wolf whistle to. Usually from halter topped young women in hot convertibles. (I'm guessing they didn't get THAT good a look at me but liked all the skin they saw!) I always waved and and smiled at them.

I rode over to Tryon Park, a few miles from the house. It had been something an orphan park. The county owned it and listed it as park land but it was undeveloped. There was an old abandoned road and some informal trails through the woods and hills. It was popular with mountain bikers. But there was no place to park. It's been quite a few years since I've been over there. I used to ride there with the on their bikes. It was always a lot of fun. The county has been busy. There's a parking area now. New trails have been added. And the signs don't say "No Bicycles On Trails". They say "Bicycle Helmets Required". They've developed it specifically for mountain biking! There's a kiosk at the parking lot with a map of the different trails and their difficulty rating.

I'm glad I decided to try biking instead of hiking today. I rediscovered a place from my past and liked the changes it's seen. I had a message on my answering machine when I got home. My car is ready. And it was $100 less than the estimate! Not a bad day!

What did you do to en-joy this perfect summer day!

What Do You Mean They LOST My Dehumidifier?
Posted:Jul 18, 2013 7:05 am

I knew Monday it was going to be a hot week. Sticky, muggy, hot. It's a good thing I ordered that 65 quart per day dehumidifier a week ago to dry out the air in my shop. There was going to be a week of cooler, dry air before the real heat wave hits us. And their website promised three to five day delivery. Perfect - I'll have it just in time.

Hmm. The UPS web site says it's on schedule for delivery on Tuesday. OK, one day late will be OK. I see the tracking data shows it was shipped the day after my order and got to the New Orleans hub that same day. But it doesn't show it moving since then. I ask Home Depot why it's still in New Orleans five days later. They assure me it will be delivered "by the end of the day" on Tuesday.

Like Waiting For Godot. It never shows up.

Now the UPS web site still shows it in New Orleans. There is no scheduled delivery date but it says it's ready for delivery. Right. On the phone with Home Depot, I explain the problem. She puts me on hold while she calls UPS. That takes so long she comes back on to apologize and tell me it will be a few more minutes.

'b]"UPS has lost that shipment."

That's not a real surprise, since, as any high school science student knows, an object can't be in two places at once. She's nice about it. Why not? Home Depot didn't screw up. "Brown" did. "UPS is going to investigate this incident. It will take them about a week." This is NOT what I want to hear. "I'll cancel that order and create a new order for you so you don't have to wait for UPS."

That's great except now I'm back to the beginning. It's going to take at least another 5 or 6 days. I object. "Look, I appreciate that but I knew we were going to be in for hot humid weather and I ordered it because I need it. I'm sitting here in a puddle of sweat. I can't wait another week." I was going to tell her that I'd look around elsewhere to see if I could get one sooner. I'd already looked in the stores. All they had were smaller units that would be good for a small basement but not for the large space I need it for at my shop.

"Let me check on something."

"OK, that item can be shipped for overnight delivery. I'm going to give you expedited shipping at no cost. And I see you bought it at a sale price. That sale has ended but I'll give it to you at the same sale price."

OK, I'll give Home Depot credit for that. That's what good customer service is like! I'm still disappointed that I've got to wait another day - it should be shipped out tonight (it takes a day to process the order and collect on my debit card and they won't ship until they are paid). But it wasn't their fault. They did ship the first one on schedule. It's the guys in brown I'm pissed at right now.

It's too damn hot. I sweat just thinking about making picture frames. My mat board stock is wilting. And I'm just repeating over and over, "It WILL be here tomorrow." "It WILL be here tomorrow." ... It fucking better be!

UPDATE: It's here today! Apparently they waived the one day order processing and shipped it out last night. It got here right after I posted this. It's out of the box and working. And hopefully things will be dried out in here by the end of the day! I'll be writing a thank you e-mail before I go home. Their customer service rep did a great job and I want to make sure I tell them so.

I'm so tempted to be working like this today! Would you mind it if you came into my shop and found me dressed like this?

I wanted to do this in my backyard with a garden hose. But there's just not much privacy in my backyard.

I tried to get an action picture of me riding my bicycle and dripping sweat. My second favorite way of getting wet in the summer time! Do you have any idea how hard it is to ride by the camera just as the 10 second timer snaps the picture? I have a lot of pictures of the front and back wheel of my bike!

So now it's cool down time. And I'm getting wet all over.

I need some help with my wand. Anybody?

Too Hot To Hike With Clothes On

Another Monday, another half naked hike...

Well, this is actually a picture from a few weeks ago. It's too hot and humid here for hiking today. Unless I hike someplace where I can jump in the pond or creek at the end of the hike.

I'll have to look for a place like that! I know a few places in the Adirondacks here in New York and in the White Mountains in New Hampshire. On the trail to Dix Mountain in the Adirondacks there is a stream, Lillian Brook, that the guide book calls "a good place to take a dip". My and I have tried it and it is very refreshing after working up a sweat climbing up and down the mountain. Exhilarating, as mountain streams always are. So much so that the other campers wouldn't do more than dip their toes in! It doesn't take long in the water to get cooled down! There's a great spot off the Franconia Brook trail in NH, too, where there are some natural channels in the creek bed above a small waterfall. They're just wide enough to sit in and let the current carry you over the falls. I need to find a place like that 300 miles closer to home!
